Write freely
Use any notebook. Mix languages, cross things out, write in the margins.
Write on paper. See within.
Keep the human ritual of writing by hand. Diary Companion reads your pages on-device, then offers a calm outside perspective—without sending your life to a server.
I keep circling the same question—
what do I actually need?
Perhaps you are not missing an answer. You may be looking for permission to choose.
Private reflection · Generated on-deviceA quieter kind of technology
A diary should still feel like a diary: paper, ink, pauses and imperfect lines. We use local intelligence after the page is written—not during it—so technology supports the ritual instead of interrupting it.
Use any notebook. Mix languages, cross things out, write in the margins.
Photograph it. A vision-language model transcribes each page in order on your device.
Read a thoughtful reflection, notice patterns, and continue the conversation privately.
The science of the hand
A keypress is a repeatable selection. A handwritten letter is a continuous path shaped by vision, touch and fine motor control. That richer sensorimotor loop is one reason the two modes feel—and register in the brain—differently.
Diary Companion joins the two: write with your hand, then search and reflect with computation.
The value of a second chair
Research on self-distancing suggests that considering an experience from an observer’s point of view can reduce emotional reactivity and repetitive thought. A trusted reader can help us step back. AI can make that kind of prompt available when another person is not.
“What might this look like if it happened to someone you care about?”
AI does not possess human care, can misunderstand you, and is not a therapist. Here its role is focused: offer a steady, nonjudgmental question; surface a possible pattern; help you look again.
Why Diary Companion
A purpose-built pipeline for mixed languages, corrections, margins and changing layouts. Designed for dedicated fine-tuning on consented handwriting—not a generic vision demo.
OCR, reflections, chat and your diary database run locally by default. Your pages stay under your control, available whenever your supported device has power.
A language model trained across broad and diverse text can suggest questions from many angles, while your own entries keep the reflection grounded in your life.
Your inner life is not telemetry
The bundled Qwen3-VL model runs through MLX on the phone’s GPU. No account, API key or server is required for the core experience. A remote endpoint exists only as an explicit choice.
Evidence, not mythology
We designed around suggestive evidence, not absolute promises. Expressive writing shows small average benefits with real variation between people. Self-distancing can support reflection, but no app replaces relationships or professional care.
From the blog
Short, research-informed reads about mental health, emotions, and reflection.
Write honestly. Keep it private. Return with a little more distance—and perhaps a little more kindness.
